Academy Award and Scholarships

Visit of French President, François Hollande at IRCAD

On January 30, 2014, Professor Jacques Marescaux welcomed François Hollande, President of France at IRCAD to show him around the facilities dedicated to minimally invasive robotic surgical platforms and the "Haras" biocluster. The French President was accompanied by Marisol Touraine, Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health, and by Geneviève Fioraso, Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Partnership contract signed by the IRCAD and COVIDIEN, world leader in the surgical industry

Since its inception in 1994, IRCAD and COVIDIEN Surgical Solutions have enjoyed a long history of collaboration in the field of surgical training. On January 29, 2014, a partnership agreement was signed between IRCAD and COVIDIEN to transfer part of COVIDIEN's educational and potentially some R&D activities in Europe to the IRCAD training center.

French Prime Minister François Fillon visited the IRCAD in Strasbourg for more than two hours in order to officialize the nomination of the 6 centers of excellence (IHU) selected by an international jury for the French government. The IRCAD was unanimously ranked first by the jury for the project: "Institute of Image-Guided Minimally Invasive Hybrid Surgery" (MIX-Surg).
The Prime Minister expressed his pride as he witnessed the symbol of French excellence in the scientific field.

Professor Jacques MARESCAUX, President of the IRCAD, has just been granted the Distinguished Contribution Award given by Sir Vincent Siew, Vice President of Taiwan. This award consecrates the achievements accomplished by the IRCAD, and notably the fruitful cooperation between the IRCAD France and the IRCAD Taiwan. The ceremony was officially held in Taiwan in the presence of André Reichardt, Vice President of the Alsace region.

On Saturday 4th of April, during the NATO summit that took place in Strasbourg, the spouses of NATO’s Heads of State were supposed to have visited the IRCAD with Jacques Marescaux as their guide.
As the visit was cancelled at the last minute due to security threats, a delegation of IRCAD guests was invited to the luxurious Rohan Palace to meet up with the spouses, and in particular with the wife of the President of the French Republic, Mrs Carla Sarkozy.

Drums and Chinese dragons welcomed the French delegation led by Professor Jacques Marescaux. The IRCAD (Institute for Research on Cancers of the Digestive Tract) in Strasbourg now has its clone in Taiwan: the ASIA IRCAD Taiwan, a centre of 7,300 square meters modelled on the Strasbourg centre, was opened with great flourish on 26th May 2008 in partnership with the Chang Bing Show Chwan Memorial Hospital, Lugang Town, Changhua County, Taiwan.

During this event, numerous officials took the opportunity to discover first-hand the full extent of the benefits brought about by this new technology. They were shown the new HD system for training in digestive and cancer surgery, the set-up of the international “IRCAD” network (Strasbourg, Taiwan, Buenos Aires and Dubai), and of course the new "intelligent OR1" operating room, the department of Virtual Reality dedicated to automatic 3D reconstructions of patient anatomy, and a tour of WeBSurg, the Internet’s very own university dedicated to laparoscopic surgery.

Four months after his election, French President Nicolas Sarkozy visited the IRCAD Institute (Research Institute against Digestive Cancer) on the 6th of September under the guidance of Professor Jacques Marescaux, President of the Institute. Theme of the visit: Research, Innovation, Robotics and New Surgical Technologies, Competitivity Pole. On this occasion, Nicolas Sarkozy also discovered the ASIA-IRCAD project, IRCAD's ''twin'' training and research center which will be inaugurated in May 2008 in Taiwan.

Operation Lindbergh, a complete telesurgical operation carried out by a team of French surgeons located in New York on a patient in Strasbourg, France, was a total success. This is the first time in medical history that a technical solution has proven capable of reducing the time delay inherent to long distance transmissions, thus making this type of procedure possible.
