On Thursday April 18, 2013, Professor Jacques Marescaux, President and Founder of the IRCAD, received the Digital Personality of the Year Award. The ceremony took place at the Potocki Hotel of the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Ile-de-France region), as part of the Digital Technology Award’s 15th edition, organized by Télécom ParisTech. This award distinguishes Professor Marescaux’s action and work in contributing to the Digital Society growth.
Since the IRCAD’s creation in 1994, Professor Jacques Marescaux has always geared his work towards computer data integration in tomorrow’s operating room.
Consequently, he encouraged the development of digital technologies (virtual reality and augmented reality) combined with robotic assisted surgery. In July 2012, as part of the IHU program, his team performed a world premiere in robotic assisted liver surgery using augmented reality intraoperatively. In September 2001, he had already revolutionized the global surgical community by performing the first robotic assisted transatlantic operation between New York and Strasbourg, known as “Operation Lindbergh”.
Concurrently, Professor Jacques Marescaux decided to integrate digital technologies into surgical education. In 2000, he created “WeBSurg”, a world-renowned website in minimally invasive surgery which currently gathers 271,000 members and counting. Additionally, 9 months ago, in order to follow the evolution of new digital supports, he launched a new training tool available on iPad: the E-World Journal of Minimally Invasive Surgery, which is ranked among the 10 most consulted medical iBooks.
